Jackson Carlaw MSP and Paul Masterton MP have raised their concerns with R S McColl's and the Post Office following the announcement that the Broom Shops R S McColl's with its Post Office is set to close.
The store has been a fixture of the Newton Mearns community since at least the 1960s and currently provides limited Post Office services to locals.
Mr Carlaw and Mr Masterton have written to McColl's to better understand why this decision has been made and to confirm that it is part of a broader business strategy about moving to larger convenience style stores.
The local politicians have also sought assurances from the Post Office that this decision will not further deplete Post Office resources in Newton Mearns.
Commenting Jackson Carlaw MSP said:
"McColl's has always seemed to be a busy store important in the local community for those not just buying their newspapers but also for smaller shopping trips.
"Given its long history in the area it is important to confirm how this decision was reached and whether there were any particular local factors at play.
"Post Office services across Eastwood remain a topic of great local concern and we must ensure that the closure of one shop does not further limit local access to this important resource."
Paul Masterton MP added:
"The East Renfrewshire high street is generally busy and popular with locals so it is surprising to see a long standing store choose to close down.
"Residents have been impacted by Post Office closures throughout East Renfrewshire in the last year or so and while counter services for the drawing of pensions and the like were not provided here it remains important that this service, although limited, is not lost forever."
